Adil’s Story
Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, Adil earned his MBA from the University of Chicago after immigrating to the United States. Over the years he has been involved with a number of businesses, and 13 years ago he purchased ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, California. After purchasing the company, Adil earned his HVAC and general contracting license. ProStar offers installation, maintenance, troubleshooting and energy management services primarily for the commercial and institutional markets. Their principal product lines include Raypak Boilers, Carrier and McQuay.

During rehab, Adil was introduced to the WalkAide System. WalkAide is an FDA approved medical device that leverages functional electrical stimulation (FES) to improve or enable the walking ability of people living with foot drop. Doctors hoped that this device would allow him to remain mobile and stay out of a wheelchair. The initial results were positive, but Adil and his family were unable to afford the device along with the intensive rehab required to enable him to learn how to use it. The specialist at WalkAide referred him to the Joseph Groh foundation and his wife, Laila reached out to us for assistance.
On September 28, 2013 Adil was struck with a major stroke at the age of 48!
The stroke caused him to lose the use of his left arm and it severely impaired the use of his left leg. Adil could only walk with a heavy brace because of the severe foot drop caused by the stroke. This has caused his muscles to atrophy and doctors were concerned that this would eventually confine him to a wheelchair permanently. Since the stroke he has not been able to work, and with only his wife working things have become extremely difficult with 3 children in college and one in elementary school.
Thanks to your generosity, the foundation was able to grant her request!
The results thus far have been everything Adil and Laila could have hoped for. His doctor recently told us that Adil has been able to go out into the community and use his WalkAide device independently, even without assistance. Within the past week, Laila told me the team had measured Adil’s left leg and reported that the circumference of his thigh and calf muscles have grown, meaning the muscle is regenerating and not atrophying. “This is really very encouraging and has happened only because of the WalkAide replacing the artificial brace,” Laila writes. “Thank you for all you have done for Adil. We are eternally grateful, God bless.”
