KEEPING INDEPENDENCE IN MOTION

Castle Andrews of Burleson, Texas, spent years supporting the construction industry, hauling concrete and transporting large container toolboxes to and from job sites.

On April 1, 2012, Castle was rear-ended by a speeding vehicle while waiting for clearance to enter a driveway. A few years later, she was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis, which affects her spinal cord and brain. Today, Castle relies on a power chair full-time.

Then, in December 2024, Castle received a letter from Medicaid requiring her to reapply. After two denials, she lost her Star Plus Waiver and the services that had been covering her long-term needs. “I have been struggling with one application after the next trying to get things reapplied,” she shared. Because of this gap, she was faced with covering the 20% of her new power wheelchair that Medicare does not pay — an amount between $6,200 and $6,300. “My power wheelchair is due to be replaced after 5 ½ years. My doctor sent in the order, and insurance is working on approval, but they only cover 80%. This is what I need help with,” Castle explained. The Joseph Groh Foundation stepped in to bridge that gap, ensuring she could receive her new wheelchair without delay.

“This will allow me to continue getting up every day and moving about my home and complex,” Castle said. “I do my best to stay positive, even on my worst day, but I know I can’t do that if I don’t have the ability to move.”

Castle’s story is a reminder of the crucial role accessibility plays in maintaining independence. Thanks to the support of The Joseph Groh Foundation’s donors, individuals like Castle can continue facing each day with strength and hope.
