Javier Villa of Douglasville, Georgia, spent decades building a life in the construction trades. From the age of 17, he worked alongside his father as a foreman at Villas Roofing and Remodeling in San Antonio, Texas, before moving to Vulcan Materials in Lithia Springs, Georgia, where he dedicated 30 years to his craft. He retired in December 2024, bringing to a close a long and distinguished career.
Javier’s life took an unexpected turn in 2014 when a motorcycle accident left him a paraplegic. “I’ve never asked for help from anyone,” he shared, “but I am at a crossroads and really need to take a little pressure off my wife.” Over the years, his home was remodeled extensively to accommodate his needs, including ramps and a handicap-accessible shower. Yet the physical strain on his wife continued as she helped lift him in and out of bed every day.
Searching for a solution, Javier discovered The Joseph Groh Foundation online and reached out for support. The Foundation stepped in to provide a portable ceiling lift, a Handicare FST300 Free Standing Track and Portable Ceiling Lift, offering Javier and his wife much-needed relief and a greater sense of independence. “This will allow me to get in and out of my bed and into my chair daily,” he explained. “It will increase the quality of my life with my family and not be a burden on my wife.”
For Javier, the grant represents more than equipment—it is a lifeline that helps him continue living with dignity and maintaining the resilience that has defined his life. “I’m not asking for a handout; I’m asking for a hand-up,” he said. “For the last 10 years, I’ve continued to work full-time, and I’m not one to give up on life.”
Our donors understand how important accessibility is in helping individuals like Javier regain independence and support their families. Their generosity ensures that trades professionals facing life-changing challenges can continue living with dignity and purpose.
