Ten years ago, Stephany and Katrina Golden were heading home to Raleigh, North Carolina after a family visit during Memorial Day weekend. In an instant, a four-wheeler accident changed the course of Stephany’s life, leaving him a C5 quadriplegic. In the months that followed, they faced the steep challenges that come with sudden immobility—pressure ulcers, limited access within their own home, and the ongoing effort to maintain independence wherever possible.
In search of guidance, Katrina joined a Facebook support group to find answers to the many questions that come with navigating life after a spinal cord injury. There, she connected with Steve and Deanna Krueger of Austin, Texas, previous grant recipients of the Foundation. After learning of the Goldens’ HVAC connection, they encouraged Katrina to reach out to us. That introduction led to their first grant request in 2018 for a medical bed that would help prevent pressure ulcers.
Their primary bedroom remained on the second floor of their home, and a stair lift allowed Stephany to continue accessing the space safely. That lift became essential to their routine. Earlier this summer, however, it failed and required repairs well beyond what the family could afford. When the Goldens reached out once more, we stepped in to assist. Through the continued support of our donors, we were able to fund the repairs needed to get the stairlift back in working order, restoring safe access to their home and easing a significant worry for the family.
The Joseph Groh Foundation is grateful for our network of supporters who make this kind of meaningful, practical assistance possible. Their commitment allows families like the Goldens to move forward with greater comfort, stability, and hope.
