YORAM MEHR’S STORY
For more than 17 years, Yoram built a successful career in construction management as a project engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area. His expertise in contract administration, cost estimating, construction management, and project scheduling contributed to projects for both public and private organizations, including the San Francisco Unified School District, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, San Francisco Department of Public Works, Genentech, and Gilead.
Everything changed in May 2023 when Yoram sustained a spinal cord injury in a motor vehicle accident. Today, he is living with an ASIA B paraplegic spinal cord injury and is focused on rebuilding his independence one step at a time.
While searching for resources to help him live safely and independently until his home could be fully modified for accessibility, Yoram was introduced to The Joseph Groh Foundation through NorCal SCI. Despite the challenges he has faced, Yoram has remained determined in his recovery. "I have momentum in my recovery, advancing from a C5 to C8 designation through disciplined physical therapy. I am a potential example of putting life back together after catastrophic injury."
Thanks to the generosity of The Joseph Groh Foundation's donors and partners, Yoram received critical home accessibility improvements that have transformed his daily life. These modifications included updates to his front entry, detached laundry room, bathroom, and kitchen, making essential areas of his home safer and more accessible. Among the completed projects were the installation of a vertical platform lift to provide access to the outdoor area, an ADA-compliant washer and dryer with improved lighting, a floating ADA sink and shelving in the bathroom, a modified bathroom doorway for easier access, pop-up kitchen cabinets, and reinforced front stairs with new railings and lighting. These improvements are more than home renovations. They restore independence, improve safety, and allow individuals like Yoram to focus on healing and moving forward with confidence.
